POKER GAMES
Origin:
The history of Poker Games is a debatable matter. The game is very much similar to the Persian game called “Aasnas”. It is considered to be taught by the Persian sailors to the people of New Orleans. The name of the game is derived from the Irish word POCA or the French word POQUE. But still is it not clear, as to whether these names really have a bearing on the origins of the poker game. It is mostly regarded as, sharing its ancestry with the games of Primero and Brelan. It is a common belief that, the emergence of poker as it is today was enhanced by all these games and factors.
Conceptions about the Poker Game:
The famous English actor, Mr. Joseph Crowell had reported about the playing of the poker game in New Orleans, in the year 1829. He said that, it was played with twenty cards and had four players who were betting. He considered the hands of the players as the most important tool in the success of the game. In the year 1843, a book written by Mr. Jonathan H. Green, mentioned the spreading of the poker game by the Mississippi riverboats.
Poker Culture:
The game of poker has become a regular feature in the American and English cultures. The phrases such as ace in the hole, beats me, call ones bluff, pass the buck, stack up, wild card, and poker face are used in the daily conversations by people, who are not even aware of the methods of playing the game. |
